The Global Citizen Center is designing and developing a mixed-use facility that will house the organization, its programs, and the work of a mission-aligned mix of tenants and strategic allies. The facility, by virtue of its architectural design, its scale, and its mix of education, entertainment, and retail offerings, expects to attract high levels of public visitation. This will allow the Center to reach an audience broader than any of its tenants could reach individually, and to engage this expanded audience with its educational and action-oriented programs.
The Center will demonstrate the impact that a physical place and
institutional continuity have on efforts to foster environmental and
social change. Furthermore, the Center will exemplify through its
design, location, and programmatic work a responsible model for
sustainable and inclusive community revitalization, such as the model
suggested by the current LEED ND (Neighborhood Development) pilot
program.
The expected outcomes and success indicators associated with this objective are to:
- Give organizations and individuals addressing environmental
sustainability and social justice a “home base” – a high quality,
affordable place from which to work, as indicated by the existence of
the completed Center; and
- Galvanize the inclusive revitalization of its surrounding area,
while mitigating the negative impacts often associated with
gentrification, as measured by the extent and diversity of the
surrounding community’s participation in the Center’s job placement
programs, enterprise incubator, and other activities.
