Our Global Citizen Careers Program |
|
|
|
In support of the Global Citizen Center’s commitment to foster new behaviors and ensure community access and diversity of participation in the Green Economy, the Center is launching a job training and placement program called Global Citizen Careers. The launch of GCCareers is scheduled for January 2007.
This program will educate college students on environmental and social justice issues as they relate to the operation of a small- to medium-sized business. In addition, the program will provide participants with job placement assistance, helping them to apply their newly acquired skills within the local Green economy.

The Need for a Green Commercial Real Estate Model
- The green economy movement is taking root in all three sectors of society: for-profit enterprise, non-profit organizations, and government.
- As the destruction of the environment becomes increasingly evident, it gets easier to recruit people to the movement for “conservation economics.” Should we protest that the Titanic is sinking or build the next boat?
- Socially screened funds (now more than $2 trillion) and “social venture capital” are starting to link social concerns (job creation) with green concerns (green jobs are more secure). Capital is shifting toward green.
- Green economy sectors (solar, wind energy, organic, hemp products, recycling technology) are increasingly popular and profitable. This draws increasing amounts of capital and technology into the sector.
- Of all economic sectors, the building industry has seen the most rapid and deep penetration of green materials and practices. The USGBC is possibly the fastest growing non-profit in the USA.
- More city governments are passing laws to strengthen the local and the green. (SF building permit acceleration for green building, Seattle government $ for builders going green, etc. See newrules.org)
- There is a growing movement focused on building the locally owned, green, fair economy. (e.g., Social Venture Network, BALLE, bayarearelocalize.org, Investors Circle, greenfestivals.org, etc.)
- The Green Festivals and the Global Citizen Center are platforms for bringing together clean-tech companies and non-profit organizations to capitalize on all these trends.
