What We See

After six years of Green Festivals, we're still amazed by the things we see when we bring like-minded people together to celebrate the Green Economy. Buying great products from responsible businesses, listening to inspiring speakers, and sharing healthy, locally grown food results in a magical combination of hope and positive energy. Now imagine you could experience all this, not just for a single weekend, but every day. That’s our vision for the Global Citizen Center – a permanent place to anchor, connect, and inspire our community.

The global citizenship movement is very diverse, yet certain principles are shared by most of the groups and individuals involved.  At the Global Citizen Center and its partner organizations, Global Exchange and the Green Festivals, we promote these principles while keeping in mind that specific conditions in each community will affect the way people set priorities. We urge you to view these Global Citizen Values and promote them in any nonviolent way you can.

Welcome to the Global Citizen Center PDF Print E-mail

gcc-poster_web.gifThe Global Citizen Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to educate the public about our need to engage in new economic practices — as consumers, businesses, and communities — that are environmentally sustainable and socially just. These principles are embodied in the Green Economy.

The Global Citizen Center will take the shape of a large mixed-use LEED-certified building that will include green retail, office space for nonprofits and socially responsible companies, event space, affordable housing for teachers, and an eco-gym that will help power the building, among other features.  Click on the links below to download the architectural drawings for the current site we are pursuing in San Francisco and the detailed proposal for the Center.  The 36,000 square foot vacant lot at 1950 Mission St. is owned by the San Francisco Unified School District, so we are proposing a combination of 69 units of affordable housing for teachers and a green community development center where the teachers can learn about the green economy and then take that knowledge into the school system.

The Challenges PDF Print E-mail

General public awareness of sustainability and its related issues has risen considerably in recent years. Despite this trend, real changes have been slow to come. According to a 2004 Gallup poll, over 60% of the American electorate believe that the environment should be an important legislative issue. Unfortunately, this broad-based verbal support does not always translate into action. Despite more than a quarter-century of Earth Days, the rise of Green activism, and the growth of environmental school curricula, the general public is lazy when it comes to pursuing the alternatives needed to secure our planet’s future. The Global Citizen Center believes that four primary factors impede our progress toward a more sustainable and just future.
